Success story

Nervacero – Control System Flexibility

Restructuring of the management system for both production plants of Nervacero (CELSA Group)
Partner:
Project objectives
  • Urgently modernize the control system of Nervacero's production (steel mill and rolling).
  • Develop a rapidly implementable solution that connects with heterogeneous systems and easily and seamlessly integrates with the independent hardware of each plant.
  • Integrate the entire technological structure of the plant.
Challenges
  • Eliminate the gap between the production control system and the company's requirements.
  • Working with obsolete technology that is difficult to maintain and unable to accommodate expansions that would adapt to increased production.
  • Eliminate connection problems between the control platforms of the steel mill (Unix) and rolling mill (Windows NT), which were then disparate.
Result
  • Solid and common tool for both plants, with simple configuration for the particular needs of each.
  • Flexible solution with a much more dynamic visualization than the previous one.
  • Extensive connectivity, future scalability, and the possibility of redundancy in new developments.

CELSA Group is a conglomerate formed by six business groups dedicated to the manufacture of steel. It constitutes the largest supply chain in Europe, and is the leading producer of low-emission circular steel on the continent: using the most sustainable and efficient technology, it recycles ferrous scrap to generate it in electric arc furnaces.

In 1988, it acquired Nervacero, a company with a production capacity of one million tons of liquid steel per year. Thus, CELSA took the lead in the national market in the production of corrugated steel for reinforced concrete and smooth round steel.

For obvious reasons, Nervacero needed exquisite control of operations to strengthen an optimal production process from start to finish. Unfortunately, the plant’s control system did not meet the company’s requirements, and there was also no expected coordination between the actors involved.

The expectations they had at the beginning of the project were exceeded by the good results: a flexible, intuitive, dynamic and open system to all the innovations in the market, past and present.
